Family History & Research
We regularly get enquiries from people who have discovered a Markenfield connection in their family tree. We are always happy to help wherever possible. The best way is to tell us what you know and we will try to fill in any gaps – or you may actually be filling in our gaps!
As you may have already read, the Markenfield family archives were removed from the Hall in the early 1600s and we sadly have no idea where they are – although we are actively searching.
We do hold the Norton/Grantley archives, although these relate largely to the immediate family.
We are currently trying to fill in the gap between 1569 and 1761 when the Hall was gifted from person to person at Elizabeth I’s will and then lived in by a series of tenant farmers after it was purchased by 1st Lord Grantley.
Until recently we had the names of the tenant farmers, but not of anyone working and living at the Hall. Now, thanks to researcher Dr Maryon Dougil, we are starting to place people here and we hope that this will help people with their own family research. Please see subsequent pages for names and dates.
