When The Friends was first established as an organisation, it was decided that different tasks should be tackled by different groups. The Friends’ Study Group was set up to tackle research and practical projects across the Estate.
Now firmly established as the corner-stone of The Friends, the Study Group has a number of Projects under its belt – and more in the pipeline.

When The Friends was first established, it was decided that different tasks should be tackled by different groups. To date we have:
The Study Group
The Study Group was established to plan and carry out practical projects across the Estate. Past Projects include the clearing and surveying of the lime kiln and quarry and liaising with the Nidderdale AONB Wallers. Further information on individual projects can be found below.
The Archive & Research Group
As the name implies, the Archive & Research Group carries out historical research in to Hall, the families that have lived here and anything connected with Markenfield in a wider context. This Group was in fact responsible for an amazing discovery in 2013 that quite literally re-wrote the Markenfield history books.
A slightly unofficial group, the previously-annual Meandering around Markenfield was organised by three of our Founder Friends; who organised a walk each year to take in a different view of the Hall or to visit a place with connections to the Hall – these have so far included Grantley Hall and Howe Hill.
Lectures & Events Group
The Friends’ Events Team, these are the people who work very hard behind the scenes to bring you a series of fascinating talks, beautiful concerts and of course a speaker interesting enough to make you want to attend the AGM! They are also responsible for bringing in funds for The Friends, and that allows the whole group to carry out all the work that they do.
The Publications Group is responsible for the writing, design and publication of The Aspects series of publications. There are five publications to date and two in the pipeline for next year and the year after. Aspects of Markenfield cover the Hall and any connections it has in the wider community – links to Fountains Abbey and Ripon Cathedral are the focus of two of the publications. They are available to order and an order form can be printed off from the History pages of this website.
