Sarah Robson - the Hall's Administrator

Sarah Robson has been Markenfield’s Administrator since 2004, which by her calculations is about three years… She is the Hall’s sole member of staff, acting as Wedding Co-ordinator, Group Bookings Organiser, Visitor Services Manager, Archivist, Curator and PA to the family. Oh yes – and she also serves cake to guided tours!

“I have always had a passion for historic artefacts – stained glass, stone circles, ruined buildings; the list is endless. I studied at the University College of Ripon & York St John, and came away with a 2:1 BA Hons in Environmental, Leisure and Heritage Management. Something kept me in Ripon after my studies – although I never quite knew what – and I have lived in the area ever since.

“I am fortunate to have worked at a number of the area’s most beautiful and important historic properties – Newby Hall, Fountains Abbey, Harewood House and the regional office of the National Trust in York; in roles ranging from House Guide, through Wedding Co-ordinator, to Assistant to the Area Manager. Finally in 2004 I began working at Markenfield Hall.

“Rob and I actually married at Markenfield in September 2004, and when I heard that the position of Administrator was available I jumped at the chance to apply. When I think back all those years, things have definitely changed – and I hope for the better. We now have a series of lectures and events throughout the year, we can now offer tea and cake to the 50+ groups that we welcome each year and we have a highly active Friends group that support the Hall and its ongoing restoration.

I don’t think it’s overstating things to say that I love Markenfield – the Hall, it’s owners and those that I work with. It is a remarkable place. Not just because of its history, but because it feels like the welcoming family home that it is – but it doesn’t just welcome its own family, it welcomes everyone. I have lost count of the number of people who have come downstairs after a tour, or on an open day, and said how peaceful the Hall is and how at home they felt. I am fortunate to experience that every day.

Sarah has just recently graduated from The University of Leicester after completing an MA in Museum Studies.
